Martorano’s Prime to open at Rivers Casino - Pittsburgh ...

Gambling = essential?? What’s up with Rivers Casino in Pittsburgh?

So in Allegheny County, Covid numbers are way up. We’re being advised to stay home. But, the Rivers Casino very recently expanded hours back to 24/7 and reopened their poker room, which had been shut down since March. Many other casinos have closed altogether until January. When nearly everything else is pulling back, they’re ramping up. What’s the deal?

Game play began on schedule on Wednesday, Jan. 11, for "Brains Vs. Artificial Intelligence: Upping the Ante," a competition at Rivers Casino in Pittsburgh that pits a Carnegie Mellon University artificial intelligence called Libratus against four of the world's best professional poker players.
Libratus represents a two-generation leap ahead from Claudico, the AI that competed in the 2015 Brains Vs. AI. "I don't know what to expect," said Jason Les, one of the poker pros and a veteran of the 2015 contest, comparing the new Libratus to a player who has been practicing the game in Antarctica for years and is only now beginning to play others.
Libratus developed its knowledge of the game and its strategy by analyzing the rules of the game, not by trying to copy the play of humans.
One of the players in each of these pairs will play on the floor of the casino, while his counterpart will be isolated in a separate room.
The pros will play more days and will "Two-table," playing two hands simultaneously.
Play will begin at 11 a.m. each day at Rivers Casino and end around 7 p.m. The public is welcome to observe game play, which will be in Rivers' Poker Room.

Questions about mid-Ohio (Columbus/Cleveland) casinos

My wife and I have been spoiled living in SW Michigan over the last 10 years. We have 3 casinos within 40 minutes of us and another 2 just over an hour if we drive to the MI/IN line. Most of them have $5 dollar tables at some point during the week/weekend and some all of the time.
I'm deep into an interview that would put me between Columbus and Cleveland. I like that Ohio has no smoking in their casinos. I've been to a Hollywood Casino before in Toledo. Seemed like during the week there were $5 tables before 5 and they go up to $10 or higher at night. I've never been not he weekend.
I read that when Columbus opened their tables were 15/25 most of the time, but that seems to have died down. What are their table minimums like and do they ever have $5 tables?
I haven't been to any of the casinos (Jack Cleveland, or the racinos) so I know nothing about them. What can you tell me?
I looked at the drives from where we would be living. We might look at going to Rivers Casino in Pittsburgh (a city that I love and miss living in). Don't know much about that place as it was built after I moved away. We also could look at Moutaineer RaceTrack in northern WV.
If all else fails, we will look at driving to Wheeling, WV to go to Wheeling Island as we know they always have lower minimums.
Thanks for your information and I look forward to rolling the dice with you.

Pittsburgh's new sportsbook: where's the extra $0.06 coming from?

TL;DR:
Newly opened sportsbook in Pittsburgh, PA presents American Odds on the board, but use decimal odds behind the scenes to calculate payouts.
They say all rounding of display numbers will be in the "player's advantage".
Is this a common thing at casino based sportsbooks? I've mainly bet online.
Details:
So, yesterday was the first day of legalized bet taking at the Rivers Casino in Pittsburgh.
I'm far from a professional, but I would say I'm decently versed in the terminology, math, and process of sports betting.
Other than an actual bet on the TNF game, I was mainly there placing two small bets to have as 'souvenir tickets' to say I placed a bet on day one: Steelers and Penguins.
So, I look at the board for the Steelers spread:
Pittsburgh Steelers | +3.0 (-117) |
Ok. Steelers are a 3 point underdog, and you have to bet $117 to profit $100.
I want to bet to win $10.00 on my souvenir ticket.
So I bet $11.70, right?
I place my bet. On my ticket:
Wager: $11.70
Potential Payout: $21.76.
Point Spread
PIT Steelers 3 -117
WHERE'S THE EXTRA $0.06 coming from?
So, there's all kinds of staff around the sports book area to answer questions that new betters may have.
I ask the one guy about it, and it's all about how the system actually works, and how they present it to the end user.
So, the sports book software uses decimal odds behind the scenes, and they just display rounded-off American Odds on the boards because that's what the US market is used to.
So, really my bet was: 1.8598 odds in decimal notation, which is around -116.30 in American Odds notation
So, I got my bet for 000.7 cheaper juice than expected, because (according to the staff member I talked to) any rounding will "always" be in the advantage of the player, never the house.

Carnegie Mellon Reveals Inner Workings of Victorious AI - Libratus, an AI that defeated four top professional poker players in no-limit Texas Hold'em earlier this year, uses a three-pronged approach with more decision points than atoms in the universe, researchers report in the journal Science.

Libratus, an artificial intelligence that defeated four top professional poker players in no-limit Texas Hold'em earlier this year, uses a three-pronged approach to master a game with more decision points than atoms in the universe, researchers at Carnegie Mellon University report.
In a paper published online today by the journal Science, Tuomas Sandholm, professor of computer science, and Noam Brown, a Ph.D. student in the Computer Science Department, detail how their AI achieved superhuman performance by breaking the game into computationally manageable parts and, based on its opponents' game play, fix potential weaknesses in its strategy during the competition.
AI programs have defeated top humans in checkers, chess and Go - all challenging games, but ones in which both players know the exact state of the game at all times.
In a 20-day competition involving 120,000 hands at Rivers Casino in Pittsburgh this past January, Libratus became the first AI to defeat top human players at Head's-Up, No-Limit Texas Hold'em - the primary benchmark and longstanding challenge problem for imperfect-information game-solving by AIs.
Measured in milli-big blinds per hand, a standard used by imperfect-information game AI researchers, Libratus decisively defeated the humans by 147 mmb/hand.
Libratus includes three main modules, the first of which computes an abstraction of the game that is smaller and easier to solve than by considering all 10161 possible decision points in the game.

Know when to fold 'em: AI beats world's top poker players

This is an automatic summary, original reduced by 86%.
To rub our faces in it, over the Christmas break, AlphaGo anonymously played dozens of the world's leading Go players online and won convincingly.
Players don't know what cards the other players have.
Poker also requires understanding the psychology of the other players.
Over the last three weeks, four of the top poker players have been locked in an exhausting 120,000 game match at the Rivers Casino in Pittsburgh.
On one table, a human player is simultaneously dealt their hand, call it hand A, and the AI is dealt hand B. On the other table, the AI player is dealt hand A and human player dealt hand B. This means that even if one player receives an unusual number of lucky hands, then this will be mirrored for the other player in the duplicate game.
Libratus only plays the two player version of Heads-Up No-Limit Texas Hold'em poker.

Computers Beat Humans at Poker. Next Up: Everything Else?

This is an automatic summary, original reduced by 84%.
A program called Libratus took on four of the best poker players in the country, at a tournament at the Rivers Casino in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
They were playing a form of poker called heads-up no-limit Texas hold 'em, where two players face off, often online, in a long series of hands, testing each other's strategies, refining their own, and bluffing like mad. After 120,000 hands, Libratus emerged with an overwhelming victory over all four opponents, winning $1,776,250 of simulated money and bragging rights as arguably the best poker player on the planet.
His previous creation, Claudico, lost to four poker pros in a similar tournament in 2015.
One apparent advantage of this is that Libratus was not limited to strategies developed by other poker players, and it sometimes came up with its own, counterintuitive moves.
Libratus dominates poker played against only one opponent at a time; move to a table full of players and the calculations are more complicated, and Libratus would be out of its depth.
For now, the program is changing the world of poker in a different way-by schooling the human players.

Artificial Intelligence Is Tough Poker Player

This is an automatic summary, original reduced by 65%.
As the "Brains Vs. Artificial Intelligence: Upping the Ante" poker competition nears its halfway point, Carnegie Mellon University's AI program, called Libratus, is opening a lead over its human opponents - four of the world's best professional poker players.
One of the pros, Jimmy Chou, said he and his colleagues initially underestimated Libratus, but have come to regard it as one tough player.
Brains Vs. AI, which began Jan. 11 at Rivers Casino in Pittsburgh, pits Chou and three other leading players - Dong Kim, Jason Les and Daniel McAulay - against Libratus in a 20-day contest in which they will play 120,000 hands of Heads-Up, No-Limit Texas Hold'em poker.
While the pros are fighting for humanity's pride - and shares of a $200,000 prize purse - Carnegie Mellon researchers are hoping their computer program will establish a new benchmark for artificial intelligence by besting some of the world's most talented players.
Each night after poker play ends, the Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center's Bridges computer performs computations to sharpen the AI's strategy.
Play begins at 11 a.m. each day and ends after 8 p.m. The public is welcome to observe game play, which is in Rivers' Poker Room.

Poker Pros Battle Artificial Intelligence to a Statistical Draw

This is an automatic summary, original reduced by 58%.
Humans can breathe easier for now after four of the world's best poker players held their own against the best artificial intelligence in no-limit Texas hold'em.
The poker pros played a combined total of 80,000 hands with the computer program, named Claudico, during an intense two-week competition.
The "Brains Vs. Artificial Intelligence" was the first major battle between top human poker players and a computer program in heads-up no-limit Texas hold'em, a version of poker that allows for unrestricted bet sizes.
The human players held a $732 713 lead over Claudico by the end of the contest, which was held at the Rivers Casino in Pittsburgh.
They created Claudico as an improved version of a previous program, called Tartanian7, which had beaten all other artificial intelligence challengers in a previous no-limit Texas Hold'em contest during the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence's Annual Computer Poker Competition last July.
The computer scientists saw the competition against top human poker players as an unprecedented experiment to test Claudico's capabilities.
